From Law Office to Lounge: The Story Behind Ash & Barrel
A cigar, a whiskey, and an old building downtown. Here is how it started.

Ash & Barrel started with a simple idea from owner Michael Smith: cigars and whiskey belong together, so why not build a place for both?
The building
When the City of Sherman approved the lounge in October 2022, the building at the corner of South Crockett and Lamar still held law offices. Instead of covering up its past, the plan was to bring it back, stripping the space down to the stucco and brick character of the original downtown building.
Why downtown Sherman
Downtown was already coming back to life, with new shops, restaurants, and events drawing people to the square. It felt like the right neighborhood for a lounge built around conversation and community.
What we built
Today, Ash & Barrel has a walk-in humidor stocked with renowned houses and boutique makers, a marble bar, leather seating, big-screen TVs, and something happening every night of the week. It is a place for seasoned smokers and curious first-timers alike.
